this is the piece that I have been working on for my School of Craft embroidered sampler assignment.

stitching around the piece of fabric to be appliqued, then pulling the stitching helps to shape the piece for ironing. I find this a little easier than finger-pressing the piece under, especially when you are working with such tiny pieces.
