in the evenings, after the kids go to bed, Derick and I like to watch a movie together or, more likely, with the tv in split screen mode he plays Oblivion, while I watch Hell’s Kitchen or some other equally educational programming.
While I usually have a certain cat on my lap, I have managed to do a little embroidery.
Then I saw what doe-c-doe did with the pattern over on her blog and loved it. Sadly, I don’t have her computer skills to color the pattern before printing it on fabric for embroidery. I don’t have her embroidery skills either, I just love her work.
So, I used a technique I’ve used in the past that works quite well and involves some costly supplies that you may not have on hand, but most high-end art supply stores tend to carry.
crayons. yup. wax crayons.
I simply transferred the pattern to fabric. Colored it in with crayons then heat set the coloring by ironing it upside down onto a scrap of cotton. It melts the crayon enough to smooth out the color. The color isn’t as deep as Gina’s but it works nonetheless. Now, I’ve not washed anything done this way so I’m not sure how long it lasts, but for a small wall hanging it’s perfect.
I’m not quite sure how I’ll use this piece, it doesn’t matter, it was the doing that was the fun part.
