My friend Sophie and I decided that this was the year we make fruitcake. Not sure why this year, but it may have had something to do with the rum toddies we consumed over Thanksgiving. mmmm. rum.
Sophie has chosen to put her trust in Alton Brown and a rum-soaked cake. Good choice.
Me? I’m sticking with Martha. I am making her Dowager Duchess Fruitcake with sherry. Sophie’s has dried fruits. Mine has the classic coma-inducing, high fructose corn syrup fruits. But my cake has a pound of butter so honestly, isn’t all that healthy dairy going to offset the bad sugars? I think so.
I also have to point out that my awesome zester came in handy once again! If you don’t have one of these I really recommend them. My dad got me mine at Lee Valley Tools. He gets all my gifts there – thanks Dad!!!
We’ll see what the results are. Maybe next year we’ll try a tequila-soaked cake for extra fun. Or maybe we’ll just skip the cake and go straight to the booze. mmmm.
