I just realized that I hadn’t shown the results of my work in Rozii’s pottery class! After teaching the kids about relief printmaking and helping them to carve their blocks and print an edition, they then used their blocks to make clay tiles or trays.
Miss Colleen let me join in – the first time I’ve worked with clay in a long time. It was quite great and I love the end result. I used my crab block, which is one of my all-time favorites. I was surprised that all of the detail was captured in the clay. When I glazed it Miss Colleen said it was important to use a wet rag to wipe off the top layer of glaze so that the detail would show through. Finally, I used a glaze called “sand” on the border – it is hard to see but it really does look like sand.
I’m not sure I’ll take up pottery anytime soon, but this was quite fun to do and I’m excited about working in her classroom again next year, even if I don’t have any kids at that school!
