This is book review week here on my blog and today I’m writing about four books in the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. These books are neither art nor craft related but nonetheless took up a huge chunk of my summer!
For some months my friend Wendy told me about the Outlander series of books. She and her husband and I think pretty much everyone in her family had read all of the books and I assume continue to circulate them amongst themselves and their friends. I’m a reader but a pretty snobby one most of the time. The idea of reading historical romance novels just didn’t sit well with me. But when they announced that a TV series was being made of the books and Wendy is started planning viewing parties that will include lots of wine well, I had to read the books. Or at least give them a try.
Four books later (keeping in mind that each of these books is about a thousand pages long) I am hooked. The first two sucked me in, the third I thought got a little Scooby-doo-ish with the main characters making some ridiculous decisions (in my humble opinion) but I carried on and all was redeemed in the fourth book. Phew.
I’m now taking a wee break but will carry on and finish the other three books in the series before March when the TV series begins and the eighth book comes out. If you are looking for a really interesting, really different book, try it. I’m pretty sure you’ll enjoy the story, the rich historical detail and especially the characters.
