I decided to use the linen that I dyed with forsythia to make little birds – three of them. I’ve even embroidered 1, 2, 3 on their tails. The linen is a very light yellow so I chose a really bold, big print for the bottom layer. Rather than match the thread to the under fabric I just picked “close enough” and I love how they are working out.
I start by drawing the pattern pieces on the layered fabric. Believe it or not, I use a Sharpie – yes the ink shows but I like it – it highlights the edges and adds to the “imperfect” vibe. Then I start stitching and cutting out the little pieces. It took about 7 hours to finish the fabric – now I can start on the birds.
